There are Halloween costumes, and then there are the characters that make people instinctively take a step backwards when you walk into the room.
Horror films have given us some of the most recognisable costumes in cinema. A white mask, a striped jumper or a battered hockey mask can be enough to identify a character before you've said a word.
If you're looking for horror movie costumes this Halloween, we've picked seven characters that have earned their place in scary movie history. Some are full-on horror villains, others bring a little dark humour, but every one of them has a look people will recognise.

1. Ghost Face – Scream
Few horror costumes are as simple or as effective as Ghost Face.
The first Scream film arrived in 1996 and helped bring the slasher movie back to a new generation. At the centre of it all was that now unmistakable combination of a long white mask, black hood and flowing robe.
That's part of what makes Ghost Face such a strong Halloween costume. You don't need to spend the evening explaining who you're supposed to be. The silhouette does most of the work for you.
There have been plenty of variations on the look over the years, including the weathered mask seen in Scream VI. Our Ghost Face Scream VI costume recreates that darker aged appearance, while the wider Scream and Ghost Face costume collection has plenty of other takes on the character.
If your idea of Halloween involves a proper horror villain, this is about as iconic as it gets.
2. Chucky – Child's Play
Bright striped top. Blue dungarees. Red hair. On paper, Chucky shouldn't look particularly frightening.
That was rather the point.
Child's Play turned an innocent-looking children's doll into one of horror's most enduring villains when the first film appeared in 1988. Since then, the Good Guys outfit has become almost inseparable from Chucky himself.
It's also a brilliant costume for Halloween because the character sits somewhere between creepy and fun. The clothes are colourful and instantly recognisable, but the character behind them is anything but friendly.
Our women's Chucky costume puts a playful spin on the familiar striped-shirt-and-dungarees look, while our full Chucky costumes collection is the place to start if you're putting together a wider Child's Play theme.
Going as two? Chucky and Tiffany also make an excellent horror pairing, which is worth considering if you're browsing our couples costumes.
3. Pennywise – IT
Clowns were never exactly everyone's favourite party guests. Pennywise hasn't helped.
Stephen King's shape-shifting villain has had several memorable screen appearances, with both the 1990 adaptation and the later IT films giving the character a distinctive visual identity.
That means Pennywise also gives you a choice when it comes to fancy dress. You can lean into the colourful retro styling associated with the 1990 version or go for the more sinister, theatrical appearance of the modern films.
Either way, the exaggerated clown styling makes Pennywise one of those horror costumes that can be recognised across a room.
The Pennywise mask gives you one of the character's most recognisable features, while our wider IT and Pennywise costume collection includes more ways to build the look.
4. Freddy Krueger – A Nightmare on Elm Street
Some horror characters are defined by their face. Freddy Krueger has an entire collection of visual trademarks.
The red and green striped jumper, battered fedora, burned appearance and infamous bladed glove have made Freddy one of the most distinctive figures in horror cinema since A Nightmare on Elm Street was released in 1984.
That combination is useful for fancy dress because you can take the costume as far as you want. A hat and striped top can immediately suggest Freddy, while masks, makeup and accessories let you build a much more complete transformation.

Just try not to fall asleep before you get there.
5. Jason Voorhees – Friday the 13th
If Ghost Face proves the power of a white mask, Jason Voorhees proves the same thing with a hockey mask.
The Friday the 13th series helped turn Jason into one of the defining figures of the slasher genre, and his mask has become a piece of horror imagery in its own right.
It's another costume that works because the key details are so recognisable. You don't necessarily need an elaborate outfit when the character has such a famous visual signature.
Our Friday the 13th Jason Voorhees costume provides a strong starting point for the look. Pair it with the character's famous mask and you've got a classic scary movie costume without having to spend hours putting it together.
6. Regan & Father Merrin – The Exorcist
Not every great horror costume has to be a masked slasher.
The Exorcist created some of the genre's most memorable imagery when it was released in 1973, and Regan's possessed appearance remains instantly associated with the film decades later.
It's also one of the more unusual choices on this list because it works particularly well as a pair.
Regan's pale green nightdress-style outfit provides the immediately disturbing visual, while Father Merrin's dark priest costume completes one of horror cinema's most famous confrontations.
Our The Exorcist Father Merrin and Regan couples costume brings the two characters together, making it a great alternative if you and your partner would rather turn up as something terrifying than something romantic.
7. Beetlejuice – Beetlejuice
Beetlejuice is proof that Halloween doesn't have to be completely serious.
Tim Burton's 1988 horror-comedy gave us one of cinema's most recognisable supernatural troublemakers, along with a black-and-white striped suit that has become almost as famous as the character wearing it.
Compared with Chucky, Jason or Ghost Face, Beetlejuice sits at the lighter end of horror. He's creepy, chaotic and very much at home at Halloween, but the costume still feels fun enough for a party rather than genuinely sinister.
That's probably why the character continues to work so well for fancy dress. Wild hair, pale makeup and those unmistakable stripes are enough to create a look people know immediately.

What Makes a Great Horror Movie Costume?
The best horror movie costumes tend to have one thing in common: a strong visual shortcut.
Ghost Face has the mask. Freddy has the striped jumper and glove. Jason has his hockey mask. Chucky has the dungarees. Pennywise has the clown makeup.
Those details matter because a fancy dress costume is much more fun when people recognise it straight away.
When you're choosing yours, think about how much transformation you actually want to do.
- For something easy and instantly recognisable: Ghost Face or Jason are difficult to beat.
- For a full character transformation: Pennywise or Freddy Krueger give you plenty to work with.
- For something creepy but fun: Chucky or Beetlejuice are great party choices.
- For couples: The Exorcist or Chucky and Tiffany let you turn the theme into a shared costume.
Comfort is worth thinking about too. If you're wearing the costume for an entire evening, there's a big difference between throwing on a recognisable outfit and spending hours behind a full mask. The best choice isn't necessarily the scariest one; it's the one you'll actually enjoy wearing.
Horror Movie Costume Ideas for Groups
A horror theme gets even better when everyone chooses a different character.
Rather than putting the whole group in matching outfits, build your own horror line-up. Ghost Face, Chucky, Pennywise, Freddy Krueger and Jason are visually completely different, but they make immediate sense together.
It also gives everyone freedom to choose their own level of horror. One person can go all-in with Pennywise makeup while someone else keeps things simple with a mask and robe.
If you'd rather stick to one franchise, Scream and Child's Play both offer multiple costume possibilities, while couples can pair characters such as Chucky and Tiffany or Father Merrin and Regan.
Scary or Spooky?
Of course, not everyone wants to spend Halloween looking like they've just escaped from a slasher film.
If you'd rather go spooky than terrifying, characters from Beetlejuice and The Addams Family are a good middle ground. You still get the gothic Halloween feel without quite as much blood, gore or nightmare fuel.
You can explore our Addams Family costumes for more gothic character ideas, including Wednesday-inspired looks.
